Treatment for bipolar disorder

If you spot the symptoms of bipolar depression in yourself or someone else, don’t wait to get help. Ignoring the problem won’t make it go away; in fact, it will almost certainly get worse. Living with untreated bipolar disorder can lead to problems in everything from your career to your relationships to your health. Diagnosing the problem as early as possible and getting into treatment can help prevent these complications.
If you’re reluctant to seek treatment because you like the way you feel when you’re manic, remember that the energy and euphoria come with a price. Mania and hypomania often turn destructive, hurting you and the people around you.

Typhoid Fever Treatment

di 00.52 Label: Treatment , Typhoid Fever , Typhoid Fever Treatment

Typhoid Fever Treatment

Antibiotics used for treating typhoid fever can kill the typhoid fever bacteria. People undergoing treatment should wash their hands often and refrain from serving food. When treatment is started early, the prognosis is often good. However, even with treatment, 20 percent of people have another episode of typhoid fever, although this is usually not as severe as the first infection.

Typhoid Fever Treatment
Typhoid fever treatment involves antibiotics that can kill the typhoid fever bacteria (Salmonella typhi). Treatment goals are also focused on providing relief of symptoms as the body and antibiotics fight the typhoid fever.

Using Antibiotics to Treat Typhoid Fever
There are several antibiotics that can be used for typhoid fever treatment. These antibiotics can shorten the course of typhoid fever and reduce the risk of death. The specific antibiotic the doctor recommends will be based on:
* The strain of typhoid fever bacteria and its sensitivity to specific antibiotics
* The age and general health of the patient
* The symptoms of typhoid fever the person is experiencing and their severity.

Many of these antibiotics are given by mouth. In more severe cases, treatment can involve hospitalization and intravenous (IV) antibiotics.

Precautions During Treatment
If you are being treated for typhoid fever, it is important to do the following:
* Keep taking the prescribed antibiotics for as long as the doctor has asked you to take them.
* Wash your hands carefully with soap and water after using the bathroom, and do not prepare or serve food for other people. This will lower the chance that you will pass the infection on to someone else.
* Have your doctor perform a series of stool cultures to ensure that no typhoid fever bacteria remain in your body.

Guide for Tuberculosis Treatment

di 18.48 Label: Guide for Tuberculosis Treatment , Treatment , Tuberculosis

Guide for Tuberculosis Treatment

In early time we did not have a specific treatment for tuberculosis. All we could do was to put the patient to bed and institute such measures as would nourish him and rest the lungs to give them a chance to heal. Now specific drugs are available which are very helpful in taking care of many mild cases on an out-patient basis. Streptomycin and dihydro-streptomycin were the first to appear and they are considered among the most useful of the group, especially for advanced cases. Isoniazid (INH) is usually given with streptomycin to prevent resistant strains from developing. This is regarded by authorities as the best combination. INH and para-aminosalicylic acid (PAS) together form the best combination for ambulatory or out-patient cases, for these drugs can be given by mouth. Streptomycin, on the other hand, is given by hypodermic injection. Treatment must be given under medical supervision.

One of the most difficult problems a doctor faces in treating the illiterate villager, and sometimes even the educated business man, is that of keeping him on the treatment for a long period, sometimes extending to two years or even more. Many patients begin to feel well the first month and think they do not have to return for check-ups. Their cough is gone they are eating well and gaining weight. What more could they want? But this reasoning is wrong. It is true perhaps that they are rid of 90% of the infection but the last 10% must be destroyed too, or it will come back, and when it does, it is likely to be resistant to the medicine given and the whole problem becomes more complicated. If you have tuberculosis, do not take things into your own hands but put yourself under the care of a competent doctor and follow his - instructions carefully. You will be well sooner and be happier if you do.

Rest is as important to the out-patient as to the hospitalized one. He should lie down for a nap at least twice a day. Working, talking, and playing place a load an the weakened lungs and they cannot be expected to heal as easily as they would if they were rested as much as pos
sible. Food is also a very important item in the treatment of tuberculosis. There is no specific food that has curative powers but a good balanced diet is what the body needs. A glass of milk between meals is helpful. Plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and milk should be taken. One big problem among village people is to provide good food when the family is poor and the patient, perhaps himself the bread-winner, is not able to earn.

The most important factor in the treatment of tuberculosis is to increase the bodily strength so that the body itself will resist and gradually destroy the disease germs. This is a slow process; therefore one who has the disease should know that he cannot get well in a week or two. The best means of increasing the bodily strength and of curing the disease is plenty 'Of air all the time, plenty of good food, out-of-door life, rest and freedom from worry.

Wherever possible it - is advisable to go to a tuberculosis hospital. In several large cities, dispensaries are conducted especially for the treatment of tuberculosis patients. In some of these dispensaries advice and medicine are given without charge to poor people.

In case the tubercular patient cannot leave his home, he should not lose hope, because by following the instructions given below, the disease can be cured in the home.

The patient must be kept in a room by himself. This room should have large windows which should be kept open day and night. Care should be taken to avoid chills and draughts. A comfortable bed should be provided. During the daytime the patient should be out of doors under the shade of a tree in a hammock. The patient's room must be kept clean by frequent scrubbing of the floors and walls.

The patient's pillow and bedding should be hung out in the sun for a number of hours several times a week. Sunlight and fresh air kill tuberculosis germs.(healtharticles.lk)

Treatment of Pulmonary Tuberculosis

di 01.04 Label: Treatment , Treatment of Pulmonary Tuberculosis , Tuberculosis

The goal of treatment is to cure the infection with drugs that fight the TB bacteria. Treatment of active pulmonary TB will always involve a combination of many drugs (usually four drugs). All of the drugs are continued until lab tests show which medicines work best.

The most commonly used drugs include:

  • Isoniazid
  • Rifampin
  • Pyrazinamide
  • Ethambutol

Other drugs that may be used to treat TB include:

  • Amikacin
  • Ethionamide
  • Moxifloxacin
  • Para-aminosalicylic acid
  • Streptomycin

You may need to take many different pills at different times of the day for 1 year or longer. It is very important that you take the pills the way your health care provider instructed.

When people do not take their tuberculosis medications as recommended, the infection becomes much more difficult to treat. The TB bacteria may become resistant to treatment, and sometimes, the drugs no longer help treat the infection.

When there is a concern that a patient may not take all the medication as directed, a health care provider may need to watch the person take the prescribed drugs. This is called directly observed therapy. In this case, drugs may be given 2 or 3 times per week, as prescribed by a doctor.

You may need to be admitted to a hospital for 2 - 4 weeks to avoid spreading the disease to others until you are no longer contagious.

Your doctor or nurse is required by law to report your TB illness to the local health department. Your health care team will be sure that you receive the best care for your TB.

Diabetes Mellitus Treatment

Treatment for Diabetes Mellitus

The goal of diabetes management is to keep blood glucose levels as close to normal as safely possible. Since diabetes may greatly increase risk for heart disease and peripheral artery disease, measures to control blood pressure and cholesterol levels are an essential part of diabetes treatment as well.

People with diabetes must take responsibility for their day-to-day care. This includes monitoring blood glucose levels, dietary management, maintaining physical activity, keeping weight and stress under control, monitoring oral medications and, if required, insulin use via injections or pump. To help patients achieve this, UCSF's Diabetes Teaching Center offers self-management educational programs that emphasize individualized diabetes care. The program enables patients to make more consistent and appropriate adjustments in their therapy and lifestyle.

Asthma Treatment

Asthma Treatment

Since asthma is a chronic disease, treatment goes on for a very long time. Some people have to stay on treatment for the rest of their lives. The best way to improve your condition and live your life on your terms is to learn all you can about your asthma and what you can do to make it better.
  • Become a partner with your health-care provider and his or her support staff. Use the resources they can offer -- information, education, and expertise -- to help yourself.
  • Become aware of your asthma triggers and do what you can to avoid them.
  • Follow the treatment recommendations of your health-care provider. Understand your treatment. Know what each drug does and how it is used.
  • See your health-care provider as scheduled.
  • Report any changes or worsening of your symptoms promptly.
  • Report any side effects you are having with your medications.

These are the goals of treatment :
  • prevent ongoing and bothersome symptoms;
  • prevent asthma attacks;
  • prevent attacks severe enough to require a visit to your provider or an emergency department or hospitalization;
  • carry on with normal activities;
  • maintain normal or near-normal lung function; and
  • have as few side effects of medication as possible.

Treatments for Hypertension

di 09.03 Label: Hypertension , Treatment , Treatments for Hypertension
The most effective treatment plan for hypertension uses a multifaceted approach. Treatment plans are also individualized to best address the specific cause and the patient's age, medical history, and severity of hypertension. Hypertension is highly treatable and in most people, prompt and ongoing treatment will result in a normalization of blood pressure and in minimizing the risk of serious complications.

Treatment begins with prevention. This includes maintaining a healthy weight, not drinking alcohol excessively, not smoking, eating a healthy-healthy diet, and getting regular exercise. These preventive measures are also generally recommended as treatment measures as well.

Not all people can effectively manage their blood pressure by these lifestyle measures alone. For these people oral medications, known as anti-hypertensive drugs, may be prescribed. Individual medications may be used alone or in combination with other medications.

Anti-hypertensive medications include diuretics, also known as "water pills", which lower blood pressure by stimulating the kidneys to flush extra fluid and salt from the body. ACE inhibitors lower blood pressure by preventing the body from making a hormone called angiotensin II, which narrows and tightens blood vessels. Angiotensin II receptor blockers protect blood vessels from the narrowing effects of angiotensin. Beta blockers help the heart to beat slower and less forcefully. Calcium channel blockers block calcium from entering the cells of the heart and blood vessels, resulting in relaxation of the vessels. Alpha blockers decrease nerve impulses that tighten blood vessels. Vasodilators relax and widen the blood vessels walls. Nervous system inhibitors work in the brain to increase messages to the blood vessels to relax and widen them.

Treatment of hypertension also includes addressing underlying causes such as thyroid disease, obesity, and kidney disease. If hypertension is caused by a certain medication, then a dosage adjustment or different medication may be needed.

Complications of hypertension are also treated as appropriate.
