Recent solar flare may disrupt your
GPS
We 're the peak of the 11- year solar
cycle , so double -check your GPS, and
watch where you' re going.
On Thursday, the sun unleashed a
massive solar flare ( see video of the
flare and how its effects have been
moving toward Earth) . Solar flares can
disrupt radio communications,
including devices that use Global
Positioning System technology , such
as cell phones, airplanes and car
navigation systems.
So if you're relying on your GPS for
driving directions, to find your location
on your phone' s mapping tool or for
any other purpose, have a backup
navigation system handy, such as a
printed map .
Even more important , pay close
attention to where you are and where
you're going. Don 't rely solely on your
GPS to give you directions.
In 2006 , research from Cornell
University proved that solar flares can
cause GPS devices to lose signal. This
can cause these devices to temporarily
misrepresent your location or
otherwise malfunction.
" If you're driving to the beach using
your car 's navigation system, you'll be
OK . If you' re on a commercial airplane
in zero visibility weather , maybe not , "
said Paul Kintner Jr . , head of Cornell 's
GPS Laboratory . In fact , the Cornell
researchers warned in 2006 that 2011
would probably see lots of GPS
disruption .
In addition , solar flares can disrupt
power systems.
This week, National Geographic
reported : " Under the right conditions,
solar storms can create extra electrical
currents in Earth 's magnetosphere - -
the region around the planet
controlled by our magnetic field. The
electrical power grid is particularly
vulnerable to these extra currents,
which can infiltrate high-voltage
transmission lines , causing
transformers to overheat and possibly
burn out ."
Across the nation , electric utilities and
grid operators are preparing to
respond to such problems.
John Bogdan, director of the National
Oceanographic and Atmospheric
Administration 's Space Weather
Prediction Center, told The Associated
Press that a number of such blasts is
expected over the next three to five
years - - and the biggest flares are yet
to come. On a scale of one to five , he
likened this week' s flare to "probably
a two or three ."
This week' s flare ( called a " coronal
mass ejection") registered M9 .3 on the
" Richter scale of flares ," about the
highest level in the " medium "
category . Larger flares that fall into the
" X" category can cause global radio
blackouts, but large M-class flares also
can cause radio disruptions.
This is one of a series of recent bouts
of severe space weather, as the solar
cycle approaches solar maximum in
2013 . Other major flares came in
February and June, and more may

A $1.1bn (£0.7bn) unmanned Nasa space mission has launched from Florida on a journey to the planet Jupiter.

The Juno spacecraft will cruise beyond Mars to put itself in orbit around the gas giant in 2016.

It is the first solar-powered mission to venture this far from the Sun.

The mission launched atop an Atlas 5 rocket from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on Friday at 12:25 local time (16:25 GMT; 17:25 BST), after a brief delay caused by a helium leak.

There were concerns with the helium charging system on the rocket's Centaur upper stage, but a small leak on the "ground side" of the rocket was found to be the culprit.

"Today, with the launch of the Juno spacecraft, Nasa began a journey to yet another new frontier," said the agency's administrator Charles Bolden.

"The future of exploration includes cutting-edge science like this to help us better understand our Solar System and an ever-increasing array of challenging destinations."
Pushing boundaries

At Jupiter, where the intensity of sunlight is only 1/25th of that at Earth, space missions would normally resort to a plutonium battery.

But Juno will instead travel with three wings coated with 18,000 solar cells.

"As a solar-panelled mission, we have to keep those solar panels facing the Sun and we never go into Jupiter's shadow," the mission's chief scientist Scott Bolton told BBC News.

"Those are things we can do and still accomplish our science; it doesn't hurt us. But it would have been easier if we could have pointed just any way we wanted. We've had to develop [a strategy], and in fact we've advanced solar cell technology in doing so."

Juno's mission is to probe the secrets of the Solar System by explaining the origin and evolution of its biggest planet.

The spacecraft's remote sensing instruments will look down into the giant through the many layers and measure their composition, temperature, motion and other properties.

This should yield some remarkable new insights into the coloured bands that wrap around the planet, and a new perspective on the famous Great Red Spot - the colossal storm that has raged on Jupiter for hundreds of years.

Scientists also want to measure the abundance of water in the atmosphere - an indicator of how much oxygen was present in Jupiter's region of the Solar System when it formed.

The probe will also try to settle old arguments over whether the planet hosts a rocky core or whether its gases go all the way down to the centre in an ever more compressed state.

And it will look for the deep swirling sea of liquid metallic hydrogen that many suspect is the driver behind Jupiter's strong magnetic field.

Juno is the second in Nasa's so called New Frontiers class missions. The first, New Horizons, was launched towards dwarf planet Pluto in 2006 and should arrive at its target in 2015. Juno probe heads for Jupiter from Cape Canaveral

Former Germany coach Jurgen
Klinsmann made his first public
appearance as coach of the U .S .
men 's soccer team, and immediately
vowed to bring some style to the job .
Klinsmann , who won the 1990 World
Cup as a player and took the German
national team to the semi -finals of the
2006 tournament, was announced as
Bob Bradley's replacement on Friday,
24- hours after the American was
sacked .
Monday saw the former striker , who
enjoyed successful spells as a player at
Tottenham Hotspur , Bayern Munich
and Inter Milan , face the press for the
first time as he set out his agenda for
the national team .
" This is exciting, " he told reporters.
" One of my challenges will be to find a
way to define how the U . S. represents
its country and its style of play."
As well as defining a new style for the
U .S . national team , Klinsmann
promised to look far and wide to
uncover new talent, delving into
America' s soccer- crazy immigrant
communities to unearth an American
Lionel Messi.
" We need to dig into where to find
more talent, " he said.
" Maybe we can find somebody kicking
the ball around the street and develop
him, but this will come with time . I
hope we find a way to find a Lionel
Messi in the United States. That would
be awesome."
Klinsmann is no stranger to the
country. The 47- year-old , who lives in
California and has an American wife,
was linked to the post on two previous
occasions and has seen U .S . soccer
grow up fast in recent years .

Apple is Getting Ready for
the iPhone 5 Launch
One of the biggest Chinese
newspapers, China Times, reported
this week that Apple has received a
shipment of 400 , 000 iPhone 5
smartphones, that are to be tested
before the release of 4 ,000 , 000 units
this September . This article suggests
that the big launch will take place in
the second week of September .
Rumors from other iPhone
publications and websites , like iPhone
Italia, who heard this from an
undisclosed executive at Swisscom,
point towards a more exact release
date, it being September 5 , which is
also Labor Day in the U .S . this year. A
major product launch on a holiday is
very unlikely and Apple hasn ’t
confirmed, denied or announced
anything official.
More info from this report indicate
that Apple will also launch the new
iPad 3 around Thanksgiving this year
and that it will be a big improvement
over the current iPad. The device is
being released later than it was initially
thought due to component problems.
Most analysts are skeptical that Apple
will launch an upgrade to one of their
best sellers , the iPad 2 , only 9 months
after it was introduced , while other
analysts say we will see a new iPad
this year in the form of an “ iPad 2
Plus”, which will be a slightly improved
iPad 2 .
Apple has previously launched new
iPhones at the Worldwide Developers
Conference(WWDC ), which is held in
June, and most people were
expecting the iPhone 5 back then .
Attention now turns to September ,
when Apple normally holds its iPod
focused event . Also, because the new
operating system is scheduled to be
released this Fall , it is expected that
the iPhone 5 will be introduced at the
same time as the iOS 5 .

Staff for the iPhone 5 Release
According to Boy Genius Report (BGR ),
AT& T is expecting a large influx of
customer in September . They have
asked managers in locations all over
the country to finish employee
training so that they can be ready and
available for the big number of
people that will want to purchase an
iPhone 5 immediately after its
introduction.
Other reports show that Apple is
increasing its staff in store locations
around the United States and United
Kingdom . Job listings have been
posted on UK websites , looking for
iPhone sales persons and specialists,
and US Apple stores are asking former
employees to return as part time
employees for “new product
launches ”.
Whether these rumors are true or not ,
we will find out shortly . Apple is
expected to announce something
officially about the iPhone 5 any day
now and they will most likely do that
by the end of August .

An American soccer starplaying for Palestine - At six foot five, with his shock ofblonde hair shaved into a fat Mohawk andtalking in a languid Georgian drawl, OmarJarun looks like he was once part of an all-conquering college basketball team.But the 26-year-old American doesn't playbasketball. Or at least not well. "I playedrecreational basketball for one season," hetold CNN."People told me I should try it because ofmy height. But I wasn't any good at it."Instead life had a different path for Jarun,one that would take him far from his nativePeachtree City, Georgia.On Sunday he will line up as a defender forthe Palestinian national soccer team as theytake on Afghanistan in a match that, just oneyear on from the World Cup final in SouthAfrica, represents one of the first stepstowards qualification for the nexttournament in Brazil in 2014.Besides being Palestine's first World Cupmatch on home soil, Sunday's encounter willhave extra significance for Jarun. It will bethe first time he has ever set foot in theWest Bank and he plans to visit his ancestraltown of Tulkarem.His team traveled for 24 hours to be able toplay their first match against Afghanistan.The game was moved from Kabul to the tinyaluminum smelting town of Tursunzade insouthern Tajikistan -- a few miles from theUzbek and Afghan border -- for fear ofviolence in Afghanistan.Palestine won 2-0 and now have a goodchance of qualifying for the second roundwhere they would play Thailand.The return match, to be held Sunday inRamallah, will also be a landmark:Palestine's first ever World Cup match onhome soil."My dad taught me to play the game. 'Nightline' GrantedExclusive Access to U.S.Drug Enforcement Officials,Learns Mexican DrugCartels Trying to ExpandMarijuana Shipments to theU.S. ExclusiveAccess toDEA AgentsUncoversMassiveMexicanDrugCartelShipmentsA "Nightline" investigation has discoveredthat Mexican cartels have recently beentrying to expand marijuana shipments intothe United States by the tens of thousands."Nightline" was granted exclusive andunprecedented access to U.S. DEA agentsand Customs and Border Protection officerswho interdict, store and destroy tons ofmarijuana.Our investigation takes a look at the scaleand reach of the Mexican cartels who arefueled by 25.8 million American marijuanausers.Government investigators estimate that thecartels have boosted their production by awhopping 59 percent since 2003, leadingthem to conclude that the Mexicanorganizations "represent the single greatestdrug trafficking threat to the United States,"an official said. DEA officers took"Nightline" inside another top-secretlocation where the agency was in theprocess of destroying 50,000 pounds, or 25tons, of marijuana. Just like with the othervault, we were not allowed to disclose itslocation nor identify who worked there.The vault is well protected with cement andsteel. Surveillance cameras are everywhere,not to mention the throngs of armed DEAagents all over the place. Each cache ofmarijuana must be accounted for and isgiven a number as it is brought inside.There is so much marijuana in the facilitythat the drugs have to be moved by aforklift.When it is time to destroy a haul, themarijuana is carried by forklift, thendumped into a large shredder before beingfed into two huge incinerators and burnedat more than 1,800 degrees. Some of theagents have even nicknamed theincinerators Dorothy and Bong 1.After the marijuana is burned to ash, it isplaced into barrels. Only steam from theheat of the incinerators is released into theatmosphere as millions and millions ofdrugs go up in smoke. UN and US launch campaign to eliminateinherited HIV The UN and the US government have launched an initiative toeliminate HIV among babies by 2015.The UN says a baby is born with HIV nearly every minute, almost allof them in sub-Saharan Africa.The new campaign will aim to treat HIV-positive pregnant women,cutting infection among their babies to less than 5%.It will cost an estimated $2.5bn (£1.5bn) to care for 15 millionwomen, double those currently being treated.The plan, called Countdown to Zero, was developed by a team led byUNAids and the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.A key element of the campaign is to ensure that all women, especiallypregnant ones, have access to quality life-saving HIV prevention andtreatment services - for themselves and their children.In 2009, an estimated 370,000 children were infected at birth withHIV, almost all in low- and middle-income countries, and chiefly insub-Saharan Africa."We are here today to ensure that all children are born healthy andfree of disease. Health Care Survey: Employers May CutPlans After 2014 some Employers Plan to NixCompany-Provided Health CareplansEmployees can kiss goodbyeemployer-provided health coverage,at least as it exists today. That's themessage of a survey of 1,300employers just released by McKinsey& Co. Overall, 30 percent of employers said that after 2014, whenmost of the provisions of the Obama administration's healthreforms kick in, they would definitely or probably stop offeringcompany-sponsored health coverage.The findings dramatically differ from those of previous surveys andanalysis. The Congressional Budget Office, for example, hasestimated that only about 7 percent of employees currentlycovered by corporate health plans will have to find alternatives.McKinsey's findings, if correct, contradict the White House's viewof how health reform will play out. They would constitute, in theeyes of the administration, a highly inconvenient truth. A WhiteHouse spokesman yesterday addressed them in an interview withABC News's Jake Tapper, noting that McKinsey's survey was "prettystarkly at odds" not just with the CBO's analysis but with those ofthe RAND Corporation and "with history."By "history" he said he meant the experience of Massachusetts,after that state passed its own version of health care reform. Saidthe spokesman: "History has shown that reforms motivate morebusinesses to offer insurance." The number of employees withemployer-sponsored health coverage in Massachusetts, he said,has increased, not decreased. Addressing the McKinsey findings hesaid, "We simply just disagree with those conclusions."How could McKinsey's findings differ so dramatically fromprevailing wisdom? Easily, say its authors.Unlike other surveys, they say McKinsey's first "educatedrespondents" about the implications of health care reform (fortheir companies and employees) before it asked them about theirpost 2014 strategies. "The propensity of employers to make bigchanges [to company-provided health coverage] increases withawareness, largely because shifting away will be economicallyrational, not only for many of them but also for their lower-incomeemployees, given the law's incentives."Further, the McKinsey survey, unlike some others, presentedemployers with a range of alternatives to their continuing to offerpresently existing coverage--not just keeping it as-is or dropping itoutright. Not surprisingly, respondents showed "a level of interesthigher than that generated by surveys asking only about plans tokeep or drop" insurance.Other findings of the survey include:-Though 30 percent of employers say they will stop offering healthcoverage after 2014, the percentage rises to 50 percent amongemployers with "a high awareness of reform."-At least 30 percent of employers would gain economically bydropping coverage, even if, to retain employees, they had to offersome other form of compensation (higher salaries, say, morevacation or greater flex-time).-Contrary to what some employers assume, most employees(85%) say they would stay at their present jobs if their employerstopped offering health coverage. A majority, however, wouldexpect to get some some kind of increased compensation inexchange.-Up to half of all employers (45-50 percent) say they will definitelyor probably pursue alternatives to company-supplied healthcoverage after 2014. "Those alternatives," write McKinsey'sauthors, "include dropping coverage, offering it through a defined-contribution model, or in effect offering it only to certainemployees"--for example, those whose skills they need to retain.The government has a special web page that explains the healthcare law.

Legalize Marijuana, SaysInventor of 'Spice'Chemicals John W.HuffmanSays Real PotIs LessDangerousThan FakePotWhen John W.Huffman invented a whole class ofchemicals that mimic the effect ofmarijuana on the human brain, he neverintended for them to launch a whole "legalmarijuana" industry.But now that "Spice" and other forms ofimitation pot are sending users toemergency rooms across America, theretired professor has an idea of how tostem the epidemic. If the federalgovernment would legalize the real thing,says Huffman, maybe consumers wouldn'tturn to the far more dangerous fake stuff.Huffman, who developed more than 400"cannabinoids" as an organic chemist atClemson University, says that marijuana hasthe benefit of being a known quantity, andnot a very harmful one. We know thebiological effects of THC, the activeingredient in marijuana, Huffman told ABCNews, because they have been thoroughlystudied. "The scientific evidence is that it'snot a particularly dangerous drug," saidHuffman.WATCH an interview with John W. Huffman.The "JWH" class of compounds thatHuffman invented to mimic marijuana'seffects, meanwhile, have not been testedthe same way. "The physiologicalcompounds effects of [JWH] compoundshave never been examined in humans,"said Huffman. What we do know, he says, isthat "it doesn't hit the brain in the sameway as marijuana, and that's why it'sdangerous."While they are known to elevate bloodpressure -- unlike marijuana -- and to causeincreased heart rate and anxiety, to datemost of the evidence of their effects isanecdotal, and comes from things like visitsto emergency rooms. "There have been anumber of people who've committedsuicide after using them," said Huffman.Huffman began working on thecannabinoids in the early 1990s using agrant from the National Institute for DrugAbuse. He published academic papers thatgave information on the chemical steps tomake the compounds, including JWH-018,one of the easiest of the class to make andthe one most often found in Spice products."JWH-018 can be made by a halfwaydecent undergraduate chemistry major,"said Huffman, "in three steps usingcommercially available materials."In 2008, says Huffman, someone sent himan article from the German magazine DerSpiegel about a young man using the JWHchemicals to get high. He subsequentlylearned that the "imitation marijuana"drugs based on his chemicals had poppedup in Europe in 2006, not long after he'dpublished a paper describing how to makethe compounds. The compounds were alsobeing used commercially in South Korea asa plant growth product, and Huffmanspeculates that they migrated from there toChina, where they are now beingmanufactured for use in Spice."I figured that somewhere along the line,some enterprising individual would try tosmoke it," said Huffman. He didn't figurethat it would become a global industry.Anyone who ingests it recreationally,Huffman stressed, is "foolish" and playing"Russian Roulette," and the head shopowners who are selling it know what theyare doing. "They can read the newspapers,they can watch TV," said Huffman. "Theyknow what's in it. And I think they'reexploiting the young people who buythem." A representative of a head shoptrade group told ABC News that theproducts should be regulated but notoutlawed.Prohibition Doesn't Work, Says HuffmanHuffman, who opposes prohibition ingeneral, doubts that a ban on thesubstances will keep kids away from it. "Wedeclared marijuana illegal in 1937. Thefederal government passed the law. Now,that really did a lot of good to keep peoplefrom smoking marijuana, didn't it?"Huffman said that making all the JWHcompounds illegal would probably havesimilar results, but emphasizes that anydecision to legalize JWH compounds shouldhinge on a thorough study of how theyaffect humans. The DEA currently bans fivecannabinoids, including JWH-018 and oneother JWH chemical, but Congress isweighing a more sweeping ban.Huffman does believes marijuana should belegalized, since its effects are known. "Itshould be sold only to people 21 andolder. It should be heavily, heavily taxed."One of the benefits of decriminalizingmarijuana, he said, would be diminishingthe allure of its more dangeroussubstitutes."I talked to a marijuana provider fromCalifornia, a doctor, a physician," explainedHuffman, "and he said that in California,that these things are not near the problemthey are in the rest of the country simplybecause they can get marijuana. Andmarijuana, even for recreational use isquite easy to get in California, and it'sessentially decriminalized. In the U.S., Sony is partnering exclusively withAT&T Inc. for cellphone service.The device, available for $249 for its Wi-Fi-only version, wasunveiled at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the video gameindustry's annual convention known as E3. A version that will alsohave cellphone service will retail for $299, and buyers will have tosubscribe to a cellular data plan.The handheld has front and back cameras, a touchscreen in front, atouch pad on the back and two knob-like joysticks. It will enablegamers to play against people using PlayStation 3 consoles overthe Internet-based PlayStation Network, a system that was recentlyrestored after being shut down due to a massive hacking attack.Sony apologized again for the outage and said since the networkwas restored, activity is back to 90 percent of the pre-attack level.The hardware comes with an accelerometer, which means it willalso react to being held at different angles and being movedthrough the air."PlayStation Vita will revolutionize the portable entertainmentexperience," Kazuo Hirai, group chief executive officer of SonyComputer Entertainment Inc., told a crowd of 6,000 at the LosAngeles Memorial Sports Arena. Myth: Allergy shots only work inchildren.Experts say allergy shots, orimmunotherapy, have nothing to do withage and can offer relief at any time. Theshots contain just enough of an allergen tostimulate the immune system, but notenough to cause an allergic reaction.With each session, doctors increase theamount of allergen in the shot. They're pretty tolook at and, experts say, it's probably notyour flowerbed that is causing your runnynose and itchy eyes.Allergies are primarily caused by wind-pollinated plants; flowers are generallyreproduced by insects. Flower pollen ismuch larger than pollen that comes fromtrees. Tree pollen can be spread throughthe air, which can then be breathed in byhumans and cause those miserablereactions."This notion comes up because flowershave pollen that is highly visible," said Li."But that pollen does not become airborneand there are not high concentrations of itin the air, like the pollens from trees,grasses and ragweed."5. Myth: Eat the local honey and youwon't get seasonal allergies.The idea makes sense. Honey is made bybees. Bees are carriers of pollen, so bits ofpollen may get into the honey. Eat the localhoney and you may build up a tolerance tothose allergens, as a whole.
